Devilman (series)

Devilman is a manga series written by Go Nagai, who is often credited with kickstarting and pioneering many genres through his work. The series follows Akira Fudo and his friend Ryo Asuka, the latter of which has discovered a secret that demons are coming to the real world and intend to reclaim it by wiping out humanity. Ryo believes the only way to save humanity is by bonding themselves with demons themselves and becoming Devilmen, humans whose hearts have won over the spirit of the devils that tried to take them over and have become mightier because of it.

Series Dictionary

• Devil/Demon: A race that was first to walk the Earth before humans, and won a war against God, and intended to slumber in preparation to overthrow God.

• Hell: Where the demons were banished to while they hibernated for millions of years. Known as a separate universe that God may have imagined into existence.

• Heaven: Another universe that may have been created by God, where the Angels reside. Not much is known about Heaven, and not many even know if it really exists.

• God: The creator of the universe. Those that the humans refer to as God may not be the true God, as it is believed that the being they know as God is actually a being below the true God, but is still the creator of the universe who has given itself the name of God to hide its evil.

• Physical World: The real world where all Devilman stories take place. Has apparently been reset countless times, where all mythologies and beliefs have taken place, but have been undone.

• Gnosticism: The belief that the universe was created by a lesser being below God, and that the fruit that Adam and Eve ate was really one that gave them knowledge about the truth of the universe. It is one theory in the Devilman universe about the identity of God.
